Understanding Grayboe's Universal Barrel Channel: A Smart Move for Versatility and Precision
At Grayboe, we’ve recently received a few common questions: “Why does my stock have so much barrel float?” “Can I get a more contoured fit for my specific barrel?” These are great questions, and we’re here to clear things up.
🔍 WHAT IS A UNIVERSAL BARREL CHANNEL?
Every single Grayboe stock—like the Phoenix, Renegade 2, and Core—features a universal barrel channel. This means the internal width of the barrel channel is designed to accept a wide variety of barrel contours, from ultra-slim sporter profiles to robust 1.250” straight contours like MTU or M24. This design choice maximizes compatibility and simplifies the ordering process.
🧰 WHY SO MUCH BARREL FLOAT? If you’re using a slimmer contour barrel—such as a Proof Research Sendero or a standard sporter—you’ll likely notice more space between the barrel and the stock. That’s called “float,” and yes, it might look a little unusual to those expecting a tight contour fit. But it’s actually beneficial, and here’s why:
- Versatility: Fit anything from a lightweight hunting barrel to a full-profile competition barrel without needing a different stock.
- Streamlined Ordering: No need to match your barrel to a specific contour option—fewer errors, faster decisions.
- Faster Production: The molded design means more efficient manufacturing and quicker delivery times.
🛠️ CAN YOU CUSTOMIZE THE CHANNEL? We often get asked: “Can you fill in or contour the barrel channel for a custom barrel fit?” The answer is no—our barrel channels come out of the mold as-is. We do not add or remove material from the barrel channel post-production. This ensures consistency and keeps the lead times short.
🦅 SMALLER CHANNEL MODELS: EAGLE, EAGLE PRO, TREKER
While our tactical models feature the wide universal channel, some of our hunting-focused models—like the Eagle, Eagle Pro, and Trekker—have slightly narrower barrel channels.
- These will fit barrels up to a Proof Sendero contour (equivalent to a Berger #5).
- They will not fit MTU, M24, or 1.250" straight barrels. Again, the channels are molded to spec and cannot be modified after production.
🧩 NO EJECTION PORT OR BOLT NOTCH? THAT’S ON PURPOSE
You might notice your Grayboe stock lacks an ejection port or bolt release notch. That’s by design. The top line of the stock sits below those areas, making the fit more universal for different actions. So all you really need to know is: Is your action a Remington 700, Tikka, or Savage? Is it short action or long action? If you can answer those two questions, your Grayboe stock will fit.
⚙️ TRIGGER HANGER COMPATIBILITY
All current Grayboe stocks also support trigger hanger modifications. Whether your action has a hanger (like the Aero Solus) or not (like a true Remington 700), it will still fit—no extra modifications required.
📦 BETTER FOR EVERYONE
This universal approach offers:
- Simplified inventory and ordering
- Improved machine lead times
- Fewer fitment errors
- Greater flexibility for future barrel upgrades
Yes, it may look different than traditional contoured stocks, but the benefits far outweigh the cosmetic difference.
💬 FINAL THOUGHTS
The universal barrel channel on every Grayboe stock is a deliberate choice to improve fit, performance, and customer experience. Whether you're a tactical shooter, hunter, or custom builder, this design gives you the flexibility to make your rifle exactly how you want it—now and in the future.
