THE NEXT GENERATION OF RIFLE STOCKS: A LEGACY CONTINUED
By Ryan McMillan, Founder of Grayboe

The name McMillan has long stood for precision, legacy, and battlefield-tested durability in the world of fiberglass rifle stocks. It’s a name I know intimately—because it's my own.

As a third-generation McMillan and former U.S. Navy SEAL, I was raised in the workshop where some of the most respected McMillan rifle stocks were first built. My grandfather, Gale McMillan, invented the fiberglass rifle stock in the late 1960s. He pioneered the hand-laid-up composite manufacturing technique, adapted from his time at Motorola, and used it to reshape the shooting industry.

That was over 50 years ago.

THE INDUSTRY STOPPED EVOLVING—BUT SHOOTERS DIDN'T

Today, many fiberglass and carbon fiber stocks are still made the same way they were in the ‘70s—by hand, layer by layer. What most buyers don’t realize is that when you purchase a traditional McMillan stock or something similar, you’re mostly paying for labor, not performance.

The actual cost of fiberglass or carbon materials is minimal. Yet prices remain high, and wait times can stretch into months. That imbalance signaled something to me: the industry had stalled, and shooters deserved better.

WHY I FOUNDED GRAYBOE: A MCMILLAN LEGACY, REINVENTED

I started Grayboe not to compete with McMillan, but to evolve the legacy. I saw three major issues holding back the modern shooter:

Availability – You shouldn’t have to wait 6+ months for a stock

Affordability – A precision rifle stock shouldn’t break the bank

Ease of Purchase – Buying a stock should be simple and intuitive

Grayboe was built to solve these. But along the journey, we discovered that with modern molding technology, precision CNC tooling, and smart design, we could do more than fix the process—we could redefine what a composite rifle stock can be.

WHAT MAKES GRAYBOE RIFLE STOCKS DIFFERENT

Our proprietary composite molding system allows us to create drop-in rifle stocks with:

Rock-solid bedding areas

Weatherproof construction

Consistent accuracy

Fast production timelines

This is what makes Grayboe stocks a true alternative to McMillan stocks.

And because we manufacture in-house with state-of-the-art tooling, we can offer these stocks at prices that make sense for real shooters. Whether you're a long-range competitor, backcountry hunter, or tactical operator, Grayboe gives you pro-grade performance without the legacy markup.

A NEW GENERATION FOR A NEW KIND OF SHOOTER

McMillan Fiberglass Stocks—now owned outside the family—continues to offer the traditional hand-laid approach that earned its reputation. But times have changed.

At Grayboe, we’re taking the core principles my grandfather established—rigidity, reliability, and repeatable accuracy—and applying them through modern manufacturing and practical accessibility.

If you're searching for a McMillan stock alternative, looking to upgrade your setup, or just exploring the next step in stock evolution, I invite you to explore what we’ve built.

We don’t just build rifle stocks.
We are The People's Riflestock.
