Remington 700 Clone Actions That Fit the Grayboe Universal Mini Chassis

The Remington 700 has become much more than a rifle action. Over decades, its basic footprint has become one of the standards of the custom rifle industry.

Today, shooters building a custom rifle can choose from aftermarket actions made by Defiance Machine, Zermatt Arms, Terminus, Lone Peak Arms, Stiller, Mack Bros, Aero Precision and many others. These actions may incorporate different bolts, extractors, recoil lugs, rails and other features, while retaining the basic Remington 700 footprint.

That creates an important question for anyone considering a Grayboe stock:

Will my Remington 700 clone fit the Grayboe Universal Mini Chassis?

In many cases, the answer is yes.

The Grayboe Remington 700 Universal Mini Chassis (UMC) is designed around the true Remington 700 footprint, allowing a large number of factory and aftermarket Remington 700-pattern actions to use the same UMC system.

But there are a few things you need to know before ordering.

What Is a Remington 700 Clone Action?

The term Remington 700 clone can be a little misleading.

It doesn't necessarily mean the manufacturer copied every dimension and feature of a Remington 700. Most premium aftermarket actions actually make significant changes to the original design.

Manufacturers may change the:

  • Bolt design and bolt throw
  • Extractor
  • Ejector
  • Recoil lug
  • Tang
  • Scope rail
  • Magazine cut
  • Bolt release
  • Barrel interface
  • Materials and coatings

What matters for stock compatibility is the action footprint.

A true Remington 700-footprint action retains the critical dimensions necessary to fit a stock or chassis designed around the corresponding Remington 700 action.

That's why the Grayboe UMC isn't limited to rifles actually manufactured by Remington.

Remington 700 Clone and R700-Pattern Actions

One of the biggest advantages of building around the Remington 700 platform is the enormous aftermarket that has developed around its footprint.

The original Remington 700 has inspired dozens of manufacturers to build their own versions of the action. Some remain extremely close to the original 700 architecture, while others retain the basic footprint but completely redesign what happens inside the receiver.

That means a shooter isn't limited to a factory Remington action when building a rifle around the Grayboe Remington 700 Universal Mini Chassis.

Below are many of the factory and aftermarket actions commonly associated with the Remington 700 footprint.

1. BAT Machine

Actions:

  • Igniter
  • Vesper

BAT Machine produces several R700-pattern actions. The Igniter is offered in Remington 700 short- and long-action footprints, while BAT also offers different Vesper action lengths.

This is an important example of why the exact model matters: BAT's Vesper S follows its short-action footprint and its Vesper follows the long-action footprint, while the Vesper M uses a medium-action footprint.

Medium-length actions should not be assumed to fit the Grayboe Remington 700 UMC.

2. Faxon Firearms

Action:

  • FX7

The Faxon FX7 belongs to the modern family of custom actions built around the Remington 700 ecosystem and is commonly categorized as an R700-footprint action.

3. Gunwerks

Action:

  • GRB

The Gunwerks GRB—Gunwerks Remington-Based action—is another custom action derived from the Remington 700 architecture.

4. Pure Precision

Actions:

  • SKLTN
  • Summit

Pure Precision's custom actions are designed for lightweight precision and hunting rifles.

Pure Precision specifically describes its SKLTN action series as maintaining the universally accepted Remington 700 footprint, while incorporating its own action design and extended magazine-box geometry.

5. Bergara

Actions:

  • B-14
  • Premier Series

Bergara is one of the best-known factory rifle manufacturers using the Remington 700-pattern ecosystem.

The Bergara B-14 is specifically supported by the Grayboe Remington 700 UMC, making it an attractive option for shooters who want UMC compatibility without starting with a standalone custom action.

Bergara's Premier rifles also use the company's Premier action architecture within the broader R700 ecosystem.

6. Christensen Arms

Rifles:

  • Mesa
  • Ridgeline

Christensen Arms rifles such as the Mesa and Ridgeline use an action architecture heavily based around the Remington 700 ecosystem.

Because these are complete factory rifles rather than simply standalone aftermarket actions, always verify the exact model, generation, action length and barrel contour before transferring a barreled action into a UMC-equipped Grayboe stock.

7. Curtis Custom

Actions:

  • Axiom
  • Helix
  • Vector

Curtis Custom produces several precision actions built around Remington 700-pattern dimensions, including the Axiom, Helix and Vector.

The Helix, for example, has been produced around a Remington 700 long-action footprint.

8. Defiance Machine

Actions:

  • anTi
  • anTi X
  • Classic
  • Rebel
  • Ruckus
  • Tenacity

Defiance Machine is one of the most recognizable names in the custom-action market and offers an enormous number of possible configurations.

Supported Defiance actions using the appropriate Remington 700 short- or long-action footprint can be used with the corresponding Grayboe UMC.

However, Defiance also manufactures actions in non-standard lengths.

Medium, XM and other non-standard action lengths should not be assumed to fit the Grayboe Remington 700 UMC.

9. Seekins Precision

Rifle/Action:

  • HAVAK PH2

The Seekins Precision HAVAK PH2 uses Seekins' HAVAK action architecture and shares important compatibility with the broader Remington 700 ecosystem.

Because the HAVAK incorporates proprietary features, verify the exact PH2 configuration before assuming UMC compatibility.

10. Springfield Armory

Rifle:

  • Model 2020 Waypoint

Springfield Armory designed the Model 2020 Waypoint around the extremely well-established Remington 700 pattern.

The Waypoint action incorporates modern features including an integral recoil lug while retaining important R700-pattern dimensions.

11. Stiller Actions

Actions:

  • Predator
  • TAC
  • Wraith

Stiller has been building custom Remington 700-pattern actions for years.

Stiller actions have appeared in numerous custom precision and hunting rifles and remain an important part of the R700 custom-action ecosystem.

12. Surgeon Rifles

Action:

  • 591

The Surgeon 591 is one of the established names in precision rifle actions and is built around the Remington 700 short-action footprint while incorporating features such as an integral recoil lug and rail.

13. Terminus Actions

Actions:

  • Apollo
  • Kratos
  • Zeus

Terminus takes the basic R700 ecosystem in a considerably different direction through features such as its three-lug bolt designs.

Despite those changes, supported Terminus R700-footprint configurations can be used with the corresponding Grayboe Remington 700 UMC.

14. Weatherby

Rifle/Action:

  • Model 307

Weatherby created the Model 307 around the enormous aftermarket associated with the Remington 700 footprint.

The result gives Weatherby shooters access to a much broader ecosystem of R700-pattern components than traditional proprietary Weatherby actions.

15. Zermatt Arms — Formerly Bighorn Arms

Actions:

  • Origin
  • SR3
  • TL3

Zermatt Arms has become one of the major manufacturers in the custom-action market.

The Origin, SR3 and TL3 combine R700-pattern compatibility with Zermatt's own mechanical designs and features.

Zermatt is also one of the manufacturers specifically identified by Grayboe as compatible with the Remington 700 UMC when using the appropriate supported R700 footprint.

16. Aero Precision

Action:

  • SOLUS

The Aero Precision SOLUS is another modern custom action built around the Remington 700 ecosystem.

Aero identifies the SOLUS as using a Remington 700 short-action footprint, making it an excellent example of how far the R700 aftermarket has expanded beyond Remington itself.

17. Remington

Action:

  • Model 700

And, of course, there is the action that started it all.

The Remington Model 700 is the original footprint around which the Grayboe Remington 700 Universal Mini Chassis is designed.

After more than half a century, its basic architecture remains one of the dominant standards of the custom bolt-action rifle industry.

18. American Rifle Company

Actions:

  • Archimedes
  • Coup De Grâce
  • Nucleus
  • Mausingfield

American Rifle Company is particularly interesting because its actions demonstrate how dramatically a manufacturer can rethink the internal operation of a bolt action while retaining compatibility with important parts of the Remington 700 ecosystem.

The Mausingfield, Nucleus, Archimedes and Coup De Grâce incorporate significant proprietary engineering.

Because ARC has produced multiple generations and configurations, we recommend confirming your exact action before assuming drop-in UMC compatibility.

19. Kauger Arms

Actions:

  • CRS
  • VPR

Kauger Arms produces custom actions for precision and hunting applications, including the CRS and VPR.

These actions are part of the broader family of custom actions designed around compatibility with established R700-style rifle components.

23. Mack Brothers

Action:

  • EVO II

The Mack Brothers EVO II is another custom action built around the Remington 700 ecosystem.

Mack Brothers is also specifically included among the manufacturers supported by the Grayboe Remington 700 UMC.

Does Every Remington 700 Clone Fit the Grayboe UMC?

This is the most important point in this entire guide:

No. The words “Remington 700 clone” alone do not guarantee that a particular action will drop directly into the Grayboe Remington 700 UMC.

The custom-action industry uses the Remington 700 footprint as a starting point, but manufacturers can alter:

  • Action length
  • Tang geometry
  • Recoil lug dimensions
  • Ejection-port geometry
  • Magazine cut
  • Trigger hanger
  • Bolt release
  • Action screw configuration
  • Bottom receiver geometry
  • Barrel tenon and barrel interface

There can even be significant differences within a single manufacturer's action lineup.

BAT Machine provides a good example. Its Igniter and Vesper S use R700 short-action footprints, while the Vesper M is a medium action. BAT also produces long-action variants. Calling all of them simply “Remington 700 clones” hides an important difference when you're choosing a stock or chassis.

The same issue exists with manufacturers offering medium, XM or other proprietary action lengths.

The Grayboe Rule of Thumb

If your action maintains a true Remington 700 short-action or long-action footprint, there is a good chance it can be used with the corresponding Grayboe Remington 700 UMC.

If your action uses a medium, XM, extended or otherwise proprietary footprint, do not assume compatibility simply because the manufacturer describes the action as R700-based.

And if you're unsure, don't guess.

Send Grayboe the manufacturer, exact action model and action length. We'll help you determine whether it will fit the Remington 700 Universal Mini Chassis.
